It has the potential to damage files and generally ruin your experience so it is best left away from your personal computer.  There are many different signs of spyware you need to look out for if you feel your desktop may be under threat somehow. It is important to be aware of these signs so you can eliminate spyware should you encounter it.

Spyware can enter your machine quite easily, it could be from an email you opened or from downloading some data, and even when you enter a website. It is because of this that you need to remain protected while online and constantly eliminate spyware should you be infected.
There is special software like spybot search & destroy and Ad-Aware which are both designed especially for tracking malware/spyware and deleting it. You get warned before you access certain pages if the detector suspects there might be a threat contained. It also searches your machine if you have any of the warning signs and it will alert you if you have any spyware on your computer. It will then try to eliminate spyware for you quickly.
